Eaton Rapids, Michigan
Steven Michael Scofic age 33, from Eaton Rapids passed away unexpectedly on January 11th in Jackson, Michigan due to a car accident.
Steven was born August 10 at 3:15 AM at Martin Army Hospital in Fort Benning Georgia, to Mike and Deena Scofic. Steven spent his early years in Eaton Rapids, moved to Grand Ledge as a high school student, and ultimately graduated from Michigan youth challenge Academy. Steven was a gifted welder and was described as "an artist of his craft", often being asked to weld the most difficult projects as most others were unable to.
More important than Steven's education or career is the person he was and his resilience. Steven was a kind, thoughtful, funny, intelligent, grateful, generous, deep thinking man, he loved the outdoors, and could catch a fish out of a puddle! One of his favorite pastimes was beating his cousin/best friend Justin at Mario kart. He loved spotting eagles, finding and researching the deepest lakes, the highest elevations, and the best fishing holes in Michigan. Steven loved being of service to others, especially his grandmother, he would often mow her lawn and sit on her back deck drinking iced tea with her. A Good example of just how selfless and generous Steven was; his step-dad lost his wallet and Steven offered up his paycheck until the wallet reappeared. Steven had a unique sense of humor, sometimes dry, sometimes quirky, mostly movie quotes but always Steven.
It is impossible to sufficiently describe Steven's strength without including his struggles. Steven battled with addiction most of his adult life. His addiction was something he fought daily, and he demonstrated ambition and perseverance that was unmatched. His addiction took him to very dark places, but he refused to let the "dragon" (as he called it) win. The shame and immense pain of his battle led him to isolate himself from everyone who loved him in a selfless and sacrificial attempt to protect those he loved most. He recognized the impact his addiction had on others and chose to minimize the pain even though his pain was also unbearable. Steven was intentional about his own recovery and encouraged those around him to do the same.
His life serves as a testimony and encouragement to those battling addiction.
Steven is preceded in death by his father, Michael Scofic, his grandparents Joe and Pam Scofic, his grandmother Bereada Houston and his Aunt Pam.
Steven will forever be loved and remembered by his mom Deena Bunce, Step-Dad Scott, sister Beth (Kevin), brother Noah, nephews Preston and Bentley. His best friend and partner in crime Justin Brininstool, his honorary sister Emily Davies, His second mom Diane Nelson, his Aunt Heidi (Jesse) who tirelessly tried to wrangle the boys, and his close friend mentor Cathy. As well as numerous other Aunts, Kae (Dave) and Jodie (Trevor); Uncle Vernon (Kristin), cousins, friends, and members of the recovery community. Who were all so important to him.
A private family gathering will be held this week and the family will receive guests for a bonfire in his honor to celebrate his life on October 25. Steven's final resting place will be in Grand Marais, Mi. This was one of his favorite places, he enjoyed being outdoors and spotting eagles with his grandma.
Donations in Steven's honor can be made to Celebrate Recovery at Trinity Church.
