Keaton Wallace Bowen, one of the brightest stars in the galaxy, dimmed on September 7, 2026. He first appeared on December 18, 2014, born in Lansing to his adoring parents, Blake and Shannon, with his beloved Nana, Janet Bowen, also there to welcome him. He was named for artists Buster Keaton and Michael Keaton, and his adored maternal grandfather, Wallace Rafferty.
Keaton was a pop culture aficionado whose knowledge predated his time on this Earth. To know him was to know that he devoured music, especially grunge. He loved artists like Phil Collins (whom he was looking forward to seeing inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), Prince, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Weird Al, Depeche Mode, and his treasured Soundgarden. His momma was so elated to take him to his first concert, Ed Sheeran, in 2023, complete with a surprise appearance by Eminem (Keaton asked how everyone knew it was really him). They shared their last concert together, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, in August. It was not uncommon for Keaton to impress the adults around him with his vast knowledge, fueled by his intense curiosity to learn about art. He had a Walkman that he played vintage cassettes on and was serious about curating his music collection.
In his all-too-brief time, Keaton relished being onstage. His first show was when his momma was pregnant with him, in a show his dad directed called “Clybourne Park.” He performed for three consecutive years in his school’s Disney Musical productions, something he took great pride and dedication in doing. He also danced beautifully at Karyn’s Dance Place, including a solo in 2025 that left his family and friends awestruck. Most recently, he was a line coach for his momma as she worked on her now-cancelled show at Peppermint Creek.
Keaton dreamed of being an ice cream maker and an actor. He loved movies and kept a running list of films to watch with his sister. His favorite movies were Forrest Gump, Once, and Fiddler on the Roof. He and his dad were working their way through the Marvel films to prepare for the Doctor Doom movie later in the year. He loved to travel and stay in hotels (which he affectionately referred to as “the room”). He took a trip with his parents last year to NYC to see several Broadway shows and explore the city.
Keaton found his tribe of wonderful kids at his school, Post Oak Academy, where he attended since pre-K. He relished his time with his friends so much (who called him “Cosmo”), sharing books and movies with one another. His family will forever be indebted to these extraordinary children for embracing and honoring their boy. Keaton identified as Pansexual, and his family and friends were proud to support him and be his allies.
His parents wish to extend their gratitude to the community that has been an extension of the family throughout Keaton’s life, including Dr. Cami Chapin, Scribbles and Giggles, Post Oak Academy, Westside YMCA, Lansing Parks and Recreation, Lansing Community College Summer Program, and Karyn’s Dance Place. A special thank you to Mr. Josh, who took Keaton under his wing at the YMCA and made him feel seen at a very early age.
Keaton leaves behind his shattered parents, Blake and Shannon; his adoring sister, Adelyne; his loving extended family, including John, Morgan, Jason, Whitney, Kirk, Kim, John, Jennifer, Vita, Granddad, Nana, Brandon, Joelle, Brodie, Alexis, Jonah, Jake, Julia, and Jaxson. He joins his grandfather, James Bowen, dog Fiyero, and countless artists that he looked up to, including Chris Cornell, Prince, and Tim Curry, in the great beyond.
A scholarship fund in Keaton’s name is being established at MSU Federal Credit Union. In the meantime, if you would like to donate, you may use Venmo through Erin Hoffman (@Erin-Hoffman-6), who will lovingly and painstakingly track each donation so the family can express their gratitude.
We hope by knowing him, folks can forever feel as though they have been changed for the better. We ask that you play music loud so that he may hear you from a faraway galaxy.
