Rev. John Walter Metcalf
Eaton Rapids, MI
Rev. John Walter Metcalf, 81, of Eaton Rapids, MI, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 13, 2025. Born on June 20, 1943, in Plymouth, Illinois, he was the son of John and Louise (Fey) Metcalf. Raised in Plymouth, John graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School in 1961 before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he proudly served during the Vietnam War and the Bay of Pigs conflict.
Following his military service, John pursued a career as an air traffic controller, working in Indianapolis, Washington, D.C., Findlay, OH, Jackson, MI, and ultimately retiring in Lansing, MI. However, his deepest calling was ministry. Answering that call, he attended seminary school and devoted 25 years to serving as a minister at Summerset Congregational Church, Mayflower Church, and the First Congregational Church of Eaton Rapids. His greatest passion was serving others, spreading the word of God, and giving back to his community through his unwavering faith and volunteer work.
John was a longtime member of the Masons and, a proud Girl Scout troop leader for several years. He also had the unique role of serving as the weatherman for Michigan International Speedway, where he monitored radar and made critical calls on race-day conditions. His interests were vast and varied—he was an avid Michigan State basketball fan, a skilled woodworker, and a devoted tennis player. Additionally, he was a licensed pilot who enjoyed both private and commercial flying.
Above all, John will be remembered for his boundless love for others, his servant’s heart, and his infectious sense of humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Karen Metcalf; daughters, Kimberly Metcalf, Stacy Metcalf, and Krista (Jason) Kusnier; grandchildren, Gretchen Lauback, Trace Kusnier, Dannon Kusnier, Courtney Metcalf, and Harrison Coy; great-grandchildren, Alec Wareh, Kylie Wareh, Madelyn Dinger, and Evelyn Dinger; sisters, Karen (Rod) Cookson, Sandy (Bob) Bowles, and Jackie Morgan; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids Chapel, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association in John’s memory. To share memories or leave condolences, please visit www.SkinnerFuneralHomes.com.
