Brenda Gay Maurer

Of Charlotte, MI, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 81. Brenda was born on December 13, 1944, in Charlotte, MI, the first of three children born to Gaylord and Joni (Jarrard) Burkett. She was raised in Eaton Rapids and graduated with the class of 1963.

Brenda was a faithful member of the Charlotte Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was baptized at the age of 12, along with her parents, on August 25, 1956. Brenda spent the rest of her life voluntarily teaching the Bible to others. On August 20, 1966, she married the love of her life, Bruce Maurer, and together they raised three children and shared 55 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Brenda dedicated much of her life to caring for children. She operated a daycare from her home for many years before continuing her work as an in-home daycare provider.

Brenda was a creative woman who enjoyed sewing and crafting and had a special gift for making those around her feel loved and seen. She loved children and had a huge heart for them. Her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother.

She also loved the outdoors and enjoyed biking, camping, hiking, kayaking and canoeing, and simply spending time in the woods or the water. Visiting Michigan’s many beautiful lakes was one of her favorite pastimes. She loved to travel and was especially awed by the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She joined her daughter on a dream trip in Paris, France where she visited Versailles, the artist Claude Monet’s house and gardens, the Louvre in Paris, along with many other museums. Brenda was athletic in her younger years and enjoyed playing softball and riding horses. She took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens.

Above all, Brenda will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her creativity, and most of all, her loving and generous heart. She brought warmth and joy to the lives of those around her and will be deeply missed.

Brenda is survived by her beloved children, Brian Maurer, Krista Maurer, Bruce Douglas (Doug) Maurer, and her grandson, Maverick Maurer; sister, Lola Masters, brother, Claude (Donna) Burkett, along with extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce, and her parents.
